How we keep your personal information safe at Luno

Worldwide, over 3 million people trust us to keep their cryptocurrencies and information safe.
Luno takes that crucial responsibility seriously.
We know that to simply throw a privacy policy on a website and call it a day isn’t good enough when it comes to assuring you that your information is airtight with us. Besides, we’re pretty sure Cambridge Analytica and Exactis had a ‘privacy policy’ somewhere on their sites at some point. This is why we self-regulate and follow all of the latest international information privacy and safety regulations and recommendations.
The information we ask you to provide isn’t just so that we know when your birthday is (although that is nice). Particulars like a verified email address, identity documents, or even a selfie help us know if you are, in fact, you. We need to do this because we exist in a time when online security equals real-world security, and we always want to keep you safe.
Personal information
This isn’t the typical dear-diary information about your life, like what you had for lunch, or if you’re thinking of buying your first home. Rather, it’s information like your ID number, legal names, and scans of your identity documents. All personally identifiable information, like your email address, mobile number, and work or residential addresses are encrypted and securely stored. To go even further to protect you, all access to this information is logged and strictly controlled on a need-to-know basis, and only certain Luno employees are able to access it.
Site, service & staff
Whenever you communicate with us, those conversations between you and our Customer Success team happen on SSL-secured channels, so wherever you see “https” in the URL bar, it’s a good indicator that you’re safe to exchange sensitive information with us. Our encryption software ensures we keep all data communication private. No individual has direct access to customers’ money and regular auditing — both financial and security auditing — ensures that your money is always safe and fully accounted for.
All our employees pass a background check, receive security training and are required to adhere to the company security policy.
Why we collect information and keep it safe
This is known as KYC or Know Your Customer process. Since we use globally recognised security measures, it means we collect, store and protect personal information from all of our customers. This may include your name, email, date of birth, home address, bank account number, a government-issued ID and a selfie. Please note, just a regular selfie of your gorgeous face is perfectly fine. We’ve seen some pretty weird stuff…
When you provide us with this information, we use it to check you are who you say you are. Once this is determined to be authentic, your information is securely stored, as per our Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations.
We regularly review and implement up-to-date technical and organisational security measures when checking your personal data to make sure it’s safe and remains that way.
Some parts of this process are automated, while others are manual. But your information is always respected and securely stored. We’re also unlikely to access this personal data after the verification process. And of course, we comply with local data protection laws at all times.
Our promise to you
We value your trust and work hard to make sure all your information is safe. Our team is trained to handle personal data securely and with the utmost respect.
We never share your information with third parties except in the limited circumstances explained in our Privacy Policy, including where you have given us your consent or we are required to do so by law.
If you would like to know more about how we handle your personal information please contact us by submitting a ticket to our Customer Success team.
