Rebecca gave up her corporate job to find her next chapter in life. Now semi-retired, she describes herself as a family woman first and a crypto investor second.

After 18 years climbing the corporate ladder, Rebecca left her job in 2021 to become the person she says she was born to be. Rebecca now not only has freedom of time, but she’s firmly in the driver’s seat of her finances – particularly when it comes to her crypto portfolio.

How a missed opportunity shaped Rebecca’s crypto experience

“It’s become my everyday thing. I eat, sleep, and live crypto,” says Rebecca.

It wasn’t always like this. Rebecca, just like everyone in crypto, had to start somewhere. For her, it was with a missed opportunity.

“In 2009, my IT guy said to me ‘there is this thing called Bitcoin, and this is how it works.’ He said he was buying 1,000 Bitcoin and he’d give me half — all I had to do was give him R500…I said no.”

Instead of lamenting her decision, Rebecca feels fortunate about the outcome because she simply didn’t understand it enough at the time.

“Sure, I lost out on Bitcoin in 2009. But do you know what I’m excited about? Right now. And it’s because I’m still so early in the game,” says Rebecca. “I’m so glad it turned out the way it did. That was a lesson I needed to learn and it’s a lesson that will stay with me forever. But that day, he planted a seed in my mind.”

Getting behind the wheel of her finances

Rebecca soon realised the only investment more important than crypto was the time needed to learn about it. She felt that if she equipped herself with knowledge, she could be in the driver’s seat of her finances.

“At first I didn’t know what I was doing, but I knew I had to do it.” says Rebecca. “Then I realised: I don’t need to become an expert. I can just be a good listener.”

She performed her own research, followed credible educators in the space, and avoided the hype. The culmination of all this has meant Rebecca can now approach crypto with a calm mind and a steady hand.

“I realised: I don’t need to become an expert. I can just be a good listener.”

“These days, when there is a flash crash, I say yes! People don’t understand my excitement and I say, don’t you get it? Buy the dip, always buy the dip. You actually buy people’s fears and sell greed. This is one of the things I’ve learned over time.”

Why crypto?

As the years rolled on, Rebecca’s confidence has grown rapidly when it comes to crypto. Today, most of her money and crypto investments are in her Luno wallet.

“I’m one of those people that doesn’t have their money in a bank account. All of my money is in crypto, and since I started with Luno in 2017, I have never requested assistance because I’ve never had a problem. I feel comfortable.

“We could have gone down the traditional investments route, but the returns were far too minimal. Technology is evolving, and I think to myself, why can’t everything else evolve as well, especially things like investments? Crypto has given me that hope.”

Being in control of her money has been an empowering experience for Rebecca, but although she eats, sleeps, and lives crypto, she says she’s still Rebecca John: a mother, wife, sister, aunt, and a people person. Now though, she’s a people person who’s really in control of her finances.
